Chapter Sixteen

Grace

Secret garage, dented truck, printed t-shirt, and a worn baseball cap—this version of Hunter Briggs was nothing like I had expected. He was better.

“How often do you do this?” I asked, as he drove the SUV out of the back of the building.

“Which part?” Hunter asked. “Do you mean the escaping unnoticed? The bar fight? Or running around in the middle of the night with a beautiful woman?” I blushed. I’d been complimented plenty of times before. I even considered myself fairly attractive, but it meant more coming from him.

“I meant the whole incognito thing,” I said. “But I’d enjoy hearing the answers to all three options.” Especially about the women.

“Being the son of my pack’s alpha, I end up with a lot of late night missions,” he said. “It helps to be able to come and go without notice. The last thing I need is a reporter following me into the woods.”

“Has that ever happened?” I asked.

“No,” he replied. “When I first moved out on my own and the media took notice of me as a person, instead of just an extension of my father, privacy was a daunting task. But my parents had kept our lives relatively private when I was young, so I took cues from them.”

“What about fights?” I asked. “Do you seek them out?” Hunter didn’t look like the brawling type, but he’d been pretty amazing in the bar.

“Never,” Hunter said. “Just like you’re committed to the job my father gave you, I’m committed to mine. I fight when I have to, but I prefer to solve my problems with words when possible.”

“And the women?” I asked, hoping the answer wasn’t what I had expected. I cringed and waited for his response.

There was enough light from the streetlamp and city traffic to see his perfect face in the dark night, even beneath the shadow of his hat. Hunter’s eyes remained on the road, but he took one hand from the wheel and placed it on mine in the middle of the bench. It was there again, that flutter in my chest, the need to be touched. At the smallest contact my body reacted to his, every inch of me wanting this man. “Grace,” he said, “I’ve wanted to find my mate since my first shift. It’s my responsibility to choose a she-wolf to secure my place as alpha if something—when something happens to my father. I’ve been with women, sure. But until my father was poisoned, I hadn’t met anyone worth more than a few dates. I’d never felt that pull before.” The rest didn’t need to be said. Saying the word ‘before’ implied that he felt differently now. I knew exactly what he meant, the magnetic force that told me this was it. But we’d only just met, and I wasn’t ready to accept that attraction meant fate. I was in control of my own destiny. I had to be.

“As soon as I had my first shift, I felt trapped,” I said. “Sorry, it’s not you.
